Del Monte shutdown leaves California growers without a buyer

What happened: Following the bankruptcy and cannery closures of Del Monte Foods, California peach growers are preparing to destroy roughly 420,000 clingstone peach trees across approximately 3,000 acres after losing one of their largest buyers. The company’s Modesto facility alone processed up to 35% of the state’s cling peaches, and the closures wiped out more than $550 million in long-term grower contracts.

With few alternative buyers available, many farmers are now being forced to remove orchards and transition to different crops. In response, the USDA approved $9 million in federal assistance to help growers uproot trees and shift production. California grower Tony McGrath described the difficult reality facing farmers: “There’s really nothing that you can move into. Walnut prices aren’t that great. You can do prunes, but it takes you seven to eight years to develop it and start getting money back from it. Almonds, there’s quite a few of them also, and it’s very expensive to start an almond orchard.”

Why it matters: For these peach growers, the contracts they had with Del Monte Foods were not short-term arrangements—they were long-term commitments built around orchards that take years to establish and decades to fully produce. The situation demonstrates how vulnerable farmers can become when entire sectors depend on a shrinking number of dominant buyers and processors. When a major processor like Del Monte collapses, farmers are often left with few alternatives. Unlike other industries, agricultural production cannot quickly pivot overnight. Orchards represent years of investment, land use decisions, and financial risk. Without sufficient processing infrastructure or competitive markets, growers can find themselves trapped between oversupply and a lack of buyers.

The situation is a reminder of the consequences of unchecked concentration across the food system. As fewer companies control processing and distribution, the collapse or consolidation of a single major player can destabilize entire agricultural regions—leaving farmers, rural communities, and local economies to absorb the fallout.
