Next7 - Reimagine Our Future
Dear friends,

One day back in 2010, a young filmmaker Graham Meriwether from NYC knocked on the door of my home in Iowa. He interviewed my Food Democracy Now! co-founder and I in the midst of our work toward building support for stronger anti-trust rules in agriculture and food, organizing a screening of Food Inc. on the Hill, and fighting for stronger regulations on antibiotics in animal feed. Despite our busy schedules, we took time to appreciate his sincerity and good humor, enjoying local food around our dinner table.

The film, American Meat is a serious β€œpro-farmer” look at meat production in America. It was a success and the first to feature Joel Salatin’s Polyface Farm and highlighted the challenges of U.S. farmers. He criss-crossed the nation with the film, partnering with Future Farmers of America and schools to create impact within our youth and leaders.

Now I’m supporting Graham’s organization as they host the Farmer Gratitude Summit happening TODAY through Nov. 22nd. I’m inviting you to join me and a stellar cast of farmers, ranchers and leaders, including Will Harris, Joel Salatin, the film’s director Graham Meriwether and Mike Rowe, narrator of Farmers for America, and many more. While many of us are aware of the abysmal state of the industrialized food system, another problem is looming, threatening our food security. The average age of an American farmer is 60, and fully 50 percent of the country’s farmland will change hands in the next 15 years. The hope is that this transfer of land contains the potential to bring together conventional older farmers with their vast experience with youthful idealistic farmers championing the local food movement. Both need each other.

β€œThe promise of America’s next agriculture is to find a way to bring these two worlds together, so that they might just create an economically viable, soil-healing, regionally focused American agriculture.”

Graham Meriwether, filmmaker

Farmers for America addresses this issue head-on as it traces the remarkable shifts coming to American agriculture as more and more consumers flock to farmers’ markets, embrace farm-to-table lifestyles and insist on knowing where their food comes from. At the center of the film are the farmers, young and old, who provide the spirit and energy to bring urban and rural America together over what both share in common: our food.
Narrated by iconic TV and podcast personality Mike Rowe, the film airs stories from farmers across the country, from legendary organic farmer Eliot Coleman’s Four Seasons Farm in coastal Maine to Primal Pastures Farm in Temecula, California, where co-owner Paul Greive has turned the operation into a $1-million online business; from Joel and Daniel Salatin’s famous Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia featured in the book, β€˜The Omnivore’s Dilemma,’ to Chuck Wirtz’s several-thousand-acre farm in northwest Iowa where he, his brothers and son have started innovative organic operations and many more.
As a bonus, we are happy to announce that the films, American Meat and Farmers for America is available to you this holiday season for a small donation.
The film was made available to PBS stations across the country and reached more than 2 million viewers in its popularity.
Now, we invite you to join us from your home this holiday season with family and friends to watch both of these eye-opening and entertaining films, American Meat and Farmers for America with your donation toward their vital educational efforts.
