The answer is simple:
Buy local.
Every stockgrowers assn (like SDSGA) should be enlisting every rancher member, and every locker / local processor to package local beef, pork and poultry. Then they should take advantage of earned media (free),and begin letting the public know where and when they can buy quarters, halves (like we do) or individual burger packs and steaks, etc, at farmers markets or designated places.
Educate folks about our common future and how the middle man is eliminated. Tell the public about how ranchers and farmers fill the coffers of city businesses and how our destiny is intertwined. Tell them about the quality and drug free aspects of local foods. [Check out SOIL Initiative]
I’ve watched (and actively participated in) this Agriculture debate raging on for years now and have come to these conclusions:
1) There will be no peace, EVER, between the big four packers and the public or the ranchers and farmers that supply our food.
2) There will be no help from our elected officials, EVER, in making the wrongs right, or in leveling the playing field.
3) Town consumers are in the monetary drivers seat and should, without delay, begin to exercise their rights.
