CPA: Talking Tariffs with Turkeys

Thanksgiving is a time for turkey, pie, and lively debates. If tariffs come up at the table tomorrow, here are a few pointers on how to keep it festive and educational!

1. Start with the Basics (Like Explaining Cranberry Sauce)

➔  “A tariff is like a fee or tax on imports from other countries. They provide needed revenue to pay for things like national defense and highways, while also promoting self-reliance for food and manufactured goods.”

• Use the table as an analogy: “More than half the lamb consumed in America is now imported, making it the first outsourced livestock. Without tariff help, turkey could be next!”

2. Tie It to Thanksgiving Traditions ➔  “Tariffs are about community. Coming together as a nation to support each other.”

• Add: “The Founding Fathers supported tariffs for revenue and self-reliance, and said so in the first sentence of the first tariff act, passed July 4, 1789.”

3. Handle Critics Like You Handle Dry Turkey ➔  If someone says tariffs hurt consumers:

“Sure, prices might go up slightly, but the government needs tax revenue, so which would you rather have? A national sales tax or tariffs? Long-term, tariffs promote independence and resiliency.”

 4. Use the Pie Metaphor ➔  “The U.S. economy is like baking a pie. If someone in another country can build a better mousetrap, they’re welcome to build it here! Tariffs encourage that, growing the American Pie bigger for all our benefit.”

5. Highlight Success Stories
➔   “After new washing machine tariffs were put in place in 2018, LG and Samsung built factories in Tennessee and South Carolina. Over a billion dollars invested in new factories. Thousands of American families supported with good jobs.”

6. Keep It Light
➔ If things get heated:

“We’re all grateful to be here, even if we disagree on trade. Let’s argue about dessert instead—pumpkin or pecan?”

7. End with Optimism
➔   “No one likes taxes, but at the end of the day, tariffs are the best tax. Our founding fathers thought so. Everything has to pass through a port anyway, so there’s no real tax burden by collecting a toll when that happens. Keep the domestic economy liquid and dynamic to drive growth and prosperity for Americans.”

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at CPA—here’s to meaningful conversations and a second helping of mashed potatoes!
