OCM: Sen. Roberts Tells Trump to Forget COOL While Brazil’s Rotten Meat Scandal Widens Worldwide
Two of the world’s largest meat companies, Brazilian meatpackers JBS and BRF, have been exposed for exporting rotten beef and trying to cover it up with cancer-causing acid products. Bloomberg reports that “Brazilian prosecutors allege some sausages and cold cuts contained animal parts such as pig heads, that some meat products were adulterated with cardboard, and that in some cases acid was used mask the smell of tainted meat.”
At least 10 countries, including China, Canada, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Japan and the European Union, have banned or suspended imports from those producers.
Meanwhile, U.S. Senate Ag Committee Chair Senator Pat Roberts fails farmers and consumers again by continuing to advocate against reinstating Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) for meat.
Meatingplace.com reports:
While the Trump administration prepares to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, is warning against any reconsideration of country-of-origin labeling (COOL).
COOL is reportedly among the administration’s “key elements of a model trade agreement” that it aims to address in renegotiating NAFTA and other trade deals. But in a committee hearing last week Roberts told Robert Lighthizer, Trump’s nominee for U.S. Trade Representative ambassador, to scrap that idea.
Take Action
It is in the best interests of U.S. consumers and U.S. independent farmers and ranchers to demand COOL be reinstated in the U.S.
Call Sen. Pat Roberts’ office at 202-224-4774 and demand reinstatement of COOL. Then, send him a follow-up message.
Don’t be bashful, and remind his ag aide that we won all four U.S. District Court cases brought on by the multinational meatpackers and their representative organizations to defeat our law of the land, Country of Origin Labeling. Why does Senator Roberts and Congress show more loyalty and support to a corporate controlled World Trade Organization than to U.S. citizens?
