Joining the Rural Revival

Listening to that voice inside Leave It Better Apr 14

Last night pulled into our driveway after 20 days on the road.

Cans of soup, awkward tetris car packing, showers with ‘conditioning’ shampoo in what looks like mustard packets. Those are the minor sometimes humorous inconveniences of roadtripping. The larger disruption is of the rhythm and cadence of home, the familiar paths we walk to the kitchen, the well grooved cushions we lean up against, the daily homecooked meals, the family hugs that serve as an antidote to whatever the flashing squawking screens are churning out.

The past twelve days I was joined by my son Abraham, who just turned eleven years old. What a gift to spend so many moments in conversation, in quiet, in each other’s perception. That’s home schooling for you. We met a lot of people, saw a lot. We were travelling to and from a new thing ‘am a part of: the Rural Revival Project. On the journey there and back we reconnected with longtime friends Joel Salatin and Matt, new friends Paul, Matt Stoller, Erica, Ansley, and Tammy. Sometimes it feels like the slower you travel, the more impactful the trip.

Last summer Joel introduced me to Chris, better known as Oliver Anthony. We participated in the Farmer Gratitude Summit together this past Fall and then Chris asked me to join a new thing he was starting. A series of strange coincidences fell into place. We began weekly meetings in January and eventually set our sites on the first event in Spruce Pine. A core group of about nine of us worked out new ideas, logistics, schedules.

Anyhoos, after months of digital interaction, we all got to meet face-to-face. There was a special feeling in the air. A sense of change. A sense of healing. The start of something bigger than individuality.

Just yesterday, wrote something introducing the Rural Revival Project. It’s a privilege and an honor to be a part.

If you like what we’re doing here, consider joining there.

Also, c’mon out. We’ll be announcing much more in-person events soon.
