Bennet: Roberts GMO Labeling Bill Doesn’t Strike Right Balance for Colorado
Washington, DC – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet issued the following statement on the Senate’s vote on a bill that would establish a national voluntary labeling standard for foods containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The bill failed to reach the 60 votes required in a 48-49 vote.
“The bill before the Senate doesn’t strike the right balance for Colorado producers, food and beverage makers, distributors, retailers, and consumers. We need a bipartisan solution that respects consumers’ right to know what’s in their food while ensuring a GMO labeling standard is fairly applied across the country. I stand ready to work with my colleagues to build consensus around a true compromise and work toward a bill that can pass the Senate.”
Colorado’s agriculture sector supports 170,000 jobs statewide and contributes $41 billion to the state’s economy.
