South Korea lifts ban on beef with zilpaterol: report

South Korea’s food ministry has lifted a ban on the use of zilpaterol in beef, according to a report by Reuters.
The move effectively allows imports of beef containing the growth-enhancing animal feed additive and domestic sales of the product in South Korea.
Zilpaterol, sold as Zilmax by Merck, caused a stir in the United States last year when major beef packers stopped using the drug for fear that it was causing cattle to arrive at slaughter unable to walk.
Merck pulled the product from the market in August 2013 and has yet to resume sales as it continues to evaluate the product and look at ways to improve training for feedyard employees on proper use.
