The nation’s top conservative donors will gather this weekend in Colorado Springs as part of a retreat hosted by Charles and David Koch that will draw Republican leaders.
The biannual Freedom Partners seminar starts Saturday at the Broadmoor Resort, a day after Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump attends a fundraiser and campaign event miles down the road at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. The three-day conference is expected to draw several hundred people from across the country.
Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner is confirmed to attend part of the event, according to a spokesman. Republican U.S. Senate candidate Darryl Glenn, who lives in Colorado Springs, is not attending, his campaign said.
The conference will focus on the network’s policy work and political efforts in various states, as well as its efforts to fund academic and think tank research, among other things. Often libertarian-leaning, the policy discussions include topics such as criminal justice reform, government spending and occupational licensure.
The Koch network is a significant force in the conservative arena and pumped big sums into Colorado in the 2014 election cycle, helping to elect Gardner and a Republican state Senate majority.
This year, it’s unclear how involved the Koch brothers will get in Colorado, as they are sitting out the presidential race given their distaste for Trump. The Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity is currently working in Colorado to defeat Democrats up and down the ballot and a citizen-led initiative for state-run health care.
