Prestage charged after gun arrest

By Tom Johnston on 7/25/2014

Prestage Farms President Ron Prestage received a second-degree felony charge Thursday following his arrest in Washington, D.C., for attempting to carry a gun into a federal building.

A preliminary hearing on the charge of carrying a pistol outside home/business has been scheduled for Aug. 13, according to court documents.

Capitol Police arrested Prestage on Wednesday morning for allegedly trying to enter the Cannon House Office Building with a loaded handgun in his bag. Congressmen told reporters they had scheduled meetings with Prestage.

Prestage oversees Prestage Farms’ South Carolina turkey operations and its Mississippi hog operations. The multi-unit company is based in Clinton, N.C., and was founded by Ron’s father, Bill Prestage.

Ron Prestage also is president-elect of the National Pork Producers Council, but he is believed to have been in Washington, D.C. on other industry matters.
