HSUS commends U.S. Department of Agriculture for releasing proposed GIPSA rules
The Humane Society of the United States commends the U.S. Department of Agriculture for its release of proposed Grain Inspection, Packers & Stockyards Administration regulations.
The proposed rules, available here, will address unfair, deceptive and anti-competitive trade practices that are apparent in the livestock and poultry industries. These practices disrupt the rural economy and put traditional farmers and ranchers out of business.
Mike Callicrate, member of The HSUS National Agriculture Advisory Council, stated: “We applaud Secretary Vilsack for addressing these issues before the end of the Administration. For years, farmers, ranchers and consumers have advocated for reforms at GIPSA to address unfair, deceptive and biased trade practices that have harmed our economy, our environment and America’s family farmers and ranchers.”
The HSUS supports the USDA in the finalization of the GIPSA rules. By providing greater transparency and greater access to open and competitive markets, these regulations have the potential to ensure the sustainability of family farmers and their traditional animal husbandry practices.
